VERA AND JOSEPH DRESNER FOUNDATION GRANTS $1 MILLION TO MOTOWN MUSEUM EXPANSION!

U.S. Representative Karen Bass

Grant announcement kicks off 2020 with continued momentum following a milestone year celebrating 60 years of Motown 60th anniversary

DETROIT, Jan. 9, 2020 —Motown Museum is beginning 2020 on a high note, today announcing a $1 million grant from the West Bloomfield, Michigan-based Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation to further its expansion campaign. Motown Museum Chairwoman and CEO Robin Terry made the announcement.

The foundation is lending support to phase one of the expansion—Hitsville Next—Motown Museum’s creative hub for entrepreneurship designed to offer innovative education and community engagement programs. The programming made possible through Hitsville Next is designed to activate and inspire future generations of creatives, artists and entrepreneurs.

The $1 million grant is the most recent contribution to Motown Museum’s expansion initiative after announcing it had reached a significant halfway funding milestone—$25 million—during the Hitsville Next groundbreaking in September as part of the museum’s Motown 60 Weekend celebration.

“Announcing we achieved halfway to our fundraising goal and the celebration surrounding phase 1 of our expansion groundbreaking was a memorable highlight in a truly historic 2019 for Motown Museum,” Terry said. “As we move in 2020, we are both gratified and inspired to see that the momentum established last year is continuing to fuel exciting new progress and support for the vision of expansion.”

The Dresner Foundation is dedicated to transforming lives in positive ways through grants focused on health, youth and animal welfare. Their mission is to partner with organizations to create opportunities and provide access to underserved youth. The foundation supports youth programs that foster self-empowerment and self-esteem through academic, artistic, personal or social enrichment.

“One of the key pillars of our mission is to help organizations develop and sustain programs that empower children and their families to help them unlock life-changing opportunities,” said Virginia Romano, CEO of Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation. “Hitsville Next is the core of the expansion and home to a creative hub specifically designed to educate, inspire and support promising young artists and entrepreneurs. Vera and Joseph were proud to call Detroit home. We are delighted to continue their legacy by supporting the museum’s innovative work, impactful educational initiatives and community engagement efforts that will continue to help elevate and transform families in our community.”

Already one of Michigan’s leading cultural institutions, the Motown Museum expansion will preserve the inspiration of Motown’s legacy for future generations. It will continue the organization’s goal to elevate the community and provide economic growth and regional enrichment for Detroiters and visitors alike.

“Hitsville Next will offer life-changing programming and opportunities for the next generation of creatives in a state-of-the-art facility,” Terry said. “Our vision for this phase of the expansion is directly aligned with the foundation’s focus on enriching lives through impactful resources that promote a strong sense of well-being in young people. Contributions like this grant from the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation are cornerstone to bringing our expanded museum to life, and we look forward to building on our fundraising progress in the year ahead.”

Announced in late 2016, the Motown Museum expansion will grow the museum to a 50,000-square-foot world-class entertainment and education tourist destination featuring dynamic, interactive exhibits, a performance theater, recording studios, an expanded retail experience and meeting spaces designed by renown architects and exhibit designers. When completed, the new museum campus will have a transformative impact on the surrounding Detroit neighborhoods, providing employment, sustainability and community pride by serving as an important catalyst for new investment and tourism in the historic area.
