Celebrate the vibrant career of early Texas Modernist Dorothy Hood at the Art Museum of South Texas. This is the largest collection of Dorothy’s work to be on exhibition.

In 2001, the Art Museum of South Texas acquired Dorothy Hood’s entire personal archive… including treasures ranging from works of art to paint brushes and art supplies as well as journals, Christmas cards and love letters.

This landmark exhibit features 160 works – 84 paintings, 47 drawings and 29 collages – produced from 1935 to 2000, including 54 works from the Art Museum of South Texas’ permanent collection and archives (the largest collection of Hood’s work in existence) and additional pieces from 65 museums, corporations, foundations and private collections located across Texas and America.

More than paintings on a wall, The Color of Being/El Color del Ser exhibition is interactive and innovative. It will encompass 11 galleries of the Art Museum of South Texas, the most space dedicated to an artist in Museum history, like no other artist has ever before.

The Color of Being/El Color del Ser introduces innovative hands-on technologies and educational interactives to bring Hood’s works of art to life and redefine the art museum experience.

This isn’t your typical art exhibit. Watch your image become an abstract work of art, deconstruct the style of Dorothy Hood, learn to paint and create a virtual painting in Dorothy’s unique style.
